Bridge Builders to the New Generation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving marginalized communities that come from underserved communities, with a huge emphasis on serving our African American males. Bridge Builders to the New Generation (BBNG) provides a host of support options for K-12 students who come from first-generation, racial/ethnic minority, and low-income backgrounds. Forms of support provided by BBNG include mentorship, subject tutoring, academic advising, weekly check-ins, career readiness, SAT/ACT workshops, and college/A-G preparation for students. These programs are designed to equip students with the knowledge and resources necessary to excel in the life arenas of higher education, career, and beyond.

Position Description

Bridge Builders to the New Generation is looking for someone enthusiastic about making positive changes in the lives of our youth. With the lack of resources provided for marginalized communities and the many gaps in our educational system, we are looking for someone to help build a bridge between our community and the education system. Bridge Builders need someone who shows compassion and a sense of vulnerability to reshape the mindset of our youth. 


Within this position, there will be weekly one-on-one academic/personal meetings with students, classroom observation, and student community-building activities. Our goal is to help shift our students' mindsets about education and show them how they can take ownership of their education. We believe that by breaking down our students' social identities, understanding their emotions, and breaking down the infrastructure of education, we will give our students the ability to define what success looks like for them.

Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Meetings 50% of time allocated to:


  • Collect student’s transcripts/ weekly report card
  • Create an academic plan with students; talk to counselors regarding the classes students are in; create an academic path for students; create student educational map (secondary; higher education; vocational school)
  • Review what kind of support students need within the classrooms: Tutors, school supplies, teacher agreements)
  • Create cohort grade report: Have students struggling grades, missing assignments, attendance, student GPA, and overall cohort GPA
  • Student pullouts: to get them a break outside of the classroom, and go over personal life, dreams/aspirations, talk about individual goals

Classroom Observation 30% of time allocated to:


  • Review how students engage in the curriculum
  • Meet with student teachers and communicate on the best way to support the students in their classes
  • When meeting with students, discuss what was observed in the classes.
  • Teach students how to advocate for themselves: communicate with their teachers, parents, administrators, and counselors)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Sociology, Child development, or any other related field. (Exception 90 accredited credits from 4-year credited university)
  • Minimum of 1 year with experience in student engagement, community development, management, or related field
  • Experience in leading and developing programs, facilitating, or co-facilitating programs
  • Proven experience in help designing programs and showing leadership skills
  • Has a burning desire to work with young people, with the ability to help show our students how to advocate for themselves and take ownership of their education.
  • Help with students who have a huge need academically, social, emotional assistance, and behavioral
  • Must be able to meet weekly with school administrators and their care team meeting, virtually or in person
  • Have training or be willing to get trained on students' IEP and 504
  • Must be able to complete and pass DOJ LiveScan/fingerprinting screen, TB screen, and any other required background clearances determined based on work-site location.

  • Help create programs and facilitate programs designed to create an inclusive and safe space for our students.
  • Create an inclusive space where we can create a dialogue with students in order to break down their social identity.
  • Go over the BBNG curriculum with students and engage them in after-school activities.
  • Contact guest speakers for programs that we plan in regard to college, career, or community leaders.
  • Lunchtime: create a space for students to come into the classroom and do activities during lunchtime

Position Description

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Before/After-School Coordinator is responsible for supervising and coordinating the program and staff. The coordinator is directly responsible for planning and organizing all Kids’ Place's daily activities. In addition, the coordinator is responsible for planning (including rosters, activities, etc.), implementing, and delivering days off of school programs. 

Qualifications 

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • Must have two years of previous experience working with elementary school-aged children. 
  • Possess basic knowledge and understanding of school-aged children.   
  • Be a self-starter and perform a job with little supervision. 
  • Possess the ability to communicate verbally and in writing. 
  • Possess the ability to follow written and oral directions. 
  • Must be able to handle any questions that arise with the public by answering them or by giving them the proper directions for the answer.   
  • Must be honest, in good health, accurate, have a neat appearance, and a courteous manner. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: 


  • Provide participants with the appropriate leadership during the program. 
  • Develop and plan activities that incorporate program goals into the daily routine. 
  • Assist with training and supervision of site directors and staff. 
  • Provide a warm and caring atmosphere for participants. 
  • Maintain open communication between Kids’ Place staff and school personnel. 
  • Prepare activities that are developmentally appropriate for the children's age. Communicate with the parents through daily drop‐off and pick‐up. 
  • Maintain a safe environment for participants. 
  • Submit all written correspondence to the Recreation Supervisor for approval prior to distribution. 
  • Maintain records of attendance and sign‐in/out sheets and turn them into the Recreation Supervisor every two weeks. 
  • Attend staff meetings. 
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward co‐workers, the Park District, and the school. 
  • Direct and guide the Kids’ Place Directors in all areas. 
  • Assign daily tasks to the Kids’ Place Directors. 
  • Report any problems that arise with participants, other employees, or the school to the Recreation Supervisor. 
  • Responsible for all activity and room preparations for the program. 
  • Keep the room neat and orderly. 
  • Keep storage room orderly and well inventoried. 
  • Request supplies for the program from the Program Directors. 
  • Assist with acquiring purchase orders and obtaining program supplies. 
  • Follow and enforce district policies and procedures. 
  • Assist with mid and end-of-the-year evaluations. 
  • Assist with program purchases. 
  • Proactively respond to any issues and concerns regarding the park district—other duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions: 

  • Make recommendations to the recreation supervisor for improvement in equipment, supplies, facility, and program needs. 
  • Set up and move furniture. 
  • Clean up the room after the program is finished. 
  • Be flexible and adaptable to new situations. 
  • Assist in other Recreation programs as needed. 

Work Hours and Compensation

The After-school Program Coordinator position is a part-time position and is paid every two weeks at an agreed hourly rate of 18.00 an hour. The position is classified as a non‐exempt hourly employee status and will work from 6 to 15 hours per week. The hours worked on a daily basis may vary.
